Post Production Process (Editing) #1

 Week 6!

Today's Blog  will discuss the post production of the editing process. The process behind our editor Emma Gonzalez and how my group and myself collaboration and thoughts impacting our editing decisions.

Overview:

The main overview we had within our last group discussion was to clear any imperfections as well as add contrast, layering and color contrast within the editing of our film. For our scenes of flashbacks of Avery's memories wanted to show very distinctively within our production. Our plans to showcase this were incorporating non diegetic sound effects. For example a sound of static from a television would be main sound implemented within our production. Works to develop in glitching affect if possible. There are many difficulties with adding this specific effect due to when it used in films for example the film Se7en. Where the scenes are faster pace compared to our film which is a slower pace which would not elevate the use of the effect. Overall these elements were a rough idea of what would like to incorporate within our production.

Process:

While I myself am not the editor and have a hard time with editing, can explain through our editors eyes of the process and thoughts within her editing the production. First and foremost the resources! The tools used to edit of course are clip Champ and Adobe express. Luckily with our editor having verification in Adobe Premier gave us a huge advantage with having the right tools for editing. Bonus to this has her personal Mac Book with drive hooked with all footage from her camera to make transitioning our footage smoother and easier. The set back with this is when this drive is plugged in it drains much battery away from the computer. Therefore, leading to limited time during designated hours in class to finish an entire scenes.

As far as progress within editing isn't completed but is working on what is discussed in the objective as far as coloring. Using Lumetric color to enhance the colors as well as fix discoloration. While our shooting was filmed in proper lightning and coloring it still needs many editing and changes needed to give off the affect needed to create that mysterious feel within our opening. Emma as well used after effects to further emphasize the static and glitchy elements that we wanted to incorporate. She really focused on these elements to tie our editing as well into our title Static. Within our last group meeting we each separately received suggestions on incorporating elements if Static like sound or effects within our editing process. With this advice we of course had to follow up within our editing.

CCR Research Question #1

 Week 6!

The final Blog for this week will be research for the first CCR question. My approaches on how to answer question #1.

Question #1:

How Does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

Conventions:

Our film Static uses the traditional conventions of mystery and psychological horror. Within our establishing shot developed the mysterious and eerie elements within the introduction to our production. From using previous blogs and prior research on horror, mystery, and psychological horror films set up the exact framework towards sticking toward the necessary conventions of these genres. Our goal was never to challenge or go beyond the standard conventions of this framework. To instead use certain pieces that highlight this genre the best and incorporate them within our framework within our story.

For example discussed in a previous post of mine where I discussed the Film Vertigo by Hitchcock. Notable for its uncomfortable shots and tension it displays in the opening credit scene within the film. As reference we used the techniques and tone within the piece and incorporated similar and same technique within our footage for our own production. Without copying the techniques and display of Hitchcock's work, we kept it as inspiration towards our storyboard and shooting process of how within technique and visually to stay and display these conventions.

Representation:

When it comes to the representation within our film we challenge the normal social groups of teenage representation. Typically within media teenagers are perceived as mis-fits, rebellious and misunderstood. Static challenges these stereotypical conventions of social representation of teenagers through our main character Avery. Unlike most Avery is reserved and seen as introverted teen girl, who isn't into makeup, fashion, or social media. Socially spends most of her free time at home and with her best friend raven.

Typically today's media portrays most teens socially revolving around alcohol, drugs, parties and illegal/ Dare devil like activities. Static challenges this in a non stereotypical way of introducing a introverted teen girl that is tied to this unexpected and graphic murder of her best friend. Avery as our highlight not only as introverted teen but female and challenges as well the gender normality's in media.  Therefore, this challenges the traditional views of teenager's portrayed within media.

Post Production Process (Editing) #2

 Week 6!

Today's Blog will correlate with editing Process #1 and discuss more tools and what helped her efforts with editing our production.

Tools:

Tools Emma used within editing are many tutorials. Tutorials on fonts, placement of texts and visual tactics to enhance a film. All sourced from the lovely platform You tube! Using these tutorials helped Emma see from even professional levels on tips and references on how to correctly edit and place effects and fonts while still keeping the vision clean and crisp. Its important and key she took time and space to reflect and learn rather than jumping straight into her editing process. Like myself would never have considered to do this approach of learning through video form as when I view editing it is very daunting to me. I would Immediately jump into editing process, however Emma choose to do the opposite and really focus on how would she get the look she wanted to achieve without feeling rushed and making careless error.

Within the timeline of her editing she also aligned music (copyrighted) with the footage. With in mind to not make the music predictable within the footage. As well as extending where the music itself doesn't correlate with the piece. Many mistakes within past projects of our music or sound not aligning with the footage or scene itself. From learning these past mistakes Emma has token note into not repeating them. With this in mind while our editing is short from end product, our editor has token the key steps to make sure that the results are excellent quality and heavily tie in the overall production

Obstacle/Issues

 Week 6!

This week I will be talking about inside of our production process as well as editing. Today's blog will reflect on all the obstacles and challenges we faced through our production.

What went Well:

Before I discuss what went badly I want to discuss some highlights of our Project. First and first most making our mise en scene elements was the best part of our production process. While there were initial obstacles when setting up and the process of creating our set design. We still thought collectively innovative way to effectively set up our main set of the prison cell 1814. We used the materials such as a dog cage and table that are relatively house hold items. As well as our design and set up process our make up and costume design corelated everything well with the exact looks my group and I will were willing to achieve for Avery's main look within the film. The main highlights was making memories and doing makeup and fake blood. Was fun filled and great bonding activity for my group members left. Overall I had amazing time behind the scenes collaborating and making memories as a group.

 Obstacles

Obstacle's faced were of course initially faced was setting all of the sets with the backdrops and lightning. As well as difficulties with lines as natural struggle all actors face. Of course discussed with our success portion we did resolve our set issues. Although, with a script our actors messed up lines very frequently. This resulted in many reshoots and un controllable laughter. While this made for excellent bloopers, it took much time away from prioritizing and filming other scenes. Therefore which led to another day needed for filming. While this minor set back it broke up our footage for filming and caused for many scenes to be out of order. My group and did overcome this obstacle it made us take notes for our filming time for future projects.

Bloopers

Here is some of my favourite behind the scenes and bloopers of just funny mistakes or trying to get into character!

Brenan

Brenna is group member I worked with in my last group meeting. His project seems to be progressing very well. His film The Push over reflects two boys Austin and Asher. The film itself is a thriller that a bully situation leads into murder. Brenna displayed and showed progress of the shooting and editing. Overall from his footage my groups feedback was to add and cut certain scenes due to lightning issues. Our team member Dylan suggested to fix the panning and framing of certain shots. Brenan seems to extremely satisfied with all his work and the team members collaboration. He highly discussed the availability of wide variety of equipment his team had access to from the CB TV production class. Overall Push over seems to be a great film and something I would watch if it were officially published for viewing.

Dylan

The title Dylan excerpt is For Will. His story line follows Will the main character is who is primarily stuck in his room due to mental illness. Following will is Derek Wills friend that is support system for him. Derek and Will are contrasting characters within their character development. That Derek writes this letter that the contents is unknow to the audience. Hencing the title For Will with the lettering entailing for Will. From Dylan’s main explanation of his film he was very not keen on showing his footage but showed behind the scenes of his production process. It looked overall professional but the only critique we could say is to add better lighting and angling certain shots of the room better to not be so bland or to repetitive. He asked for suggestions for the CCR and our team member Maia offered the suggestion of incorporating the letter from the film and having fake Letters of fans interpretation of what entails in the letter on how he answers the CCR. Overall it's fun and exciting approach to a drama film.

Noah

Noah’s film titled Straight A’ is a fixed on male teen named Oliver who has a split personality. His exterior appearance is posh and wealthy while is alter personality is unpeformative, substance abusive and sneaky teenage boy. His title Straight A’s is metaphorical contrast to the image his social wealth and expectations that oppositely allign to Olivers true actions. Since Noah film would involve use of drug our group highly advised to film with caution as they should not be use of any form of underage drug use. Although the concept of the film is very interesting with no footage to back progression leave very little work or progress for Noah in his team as our project is narrowing down the final weeks.

Amanda

Amanda’s film titled Mind over Mat. This coming of age revolves around a girl Amanda who is in taekwondo faces a major injury and is forced to take absence from her sport. She struggles with injuries to her ankle while trying to stay motivated dispute her difficulties. Within Amanda’s blog has fun and sparky light to her way of showcasing her footage. This coming of age is fun sports incorporated film that would definitely be on my watch list. We added nothing but support and fun suggestions she incorporate for her CCR such as the beloved  stuff animal Lamby featured with the film. As a cool and funny humorous way to do interview for the CCR.

Maia

Finally Maia film titled Maia; Unfiltered explores cool and unique way of incorporating blogging into her project.  Following a teen sophomore in highschool Maia who struggles with bullying and makes motivational blogs through our her life to inspire others following the same struggles. Maia has shown behind the scenes footage of her bedroom transformation and shots of the bullying scenes. My team members and I noted the cool way of adding a kid like design to her set and costume design to be scene as flaw within the characters challenges while adding some development on who Maia is. We offered advice of trying to stay natural with her script for voice overs and to get into character. As well as offering advice to incorporate more blogging within the CCR. Overall Maia project is fresh outlook on the coming of age films I've heard and I am excited to see the end result of her hard work.

Set Design Creation

 Week 5!

Last discussion for this week will be the creation of the sets and how we stayed within a budget for filming, while still being creative!

Goals/Budget:

With our expertise being amateur and budget on tight due to financial circumstances, my group and thought of ways to stay innovative without breaking the bank. For equipment luckily our team member Emma had camera already available for filming and tripod. Of course with our own cellular devices gave us access to film for behind the scenes and photography. For the Mise en Scene elements is where the money was allocated towards. Myself along with Emma combined our finances together to order a mental asylum gown, three backdrops, and props for officer costumer. Totaling up to around $100.00. Within staying our budget our goal was to use as many resources available in our location and think outside of the box to think create our set into life.

Setting up and Experimenting:

We took one day to plan and set up our location. Our initial plan was to use Emma's garage since it had the ideal space and lightning we needed. Due to circumstances with backdrops not being able to stay up we choose to set up our main scene in Emma's studio. Ultimately choosing this location worked in our favor as we were able to still add the same effect with lightning and prison scene. So now with a steady wall for our background and lightning we needed to create that bars element to our prison cell. We used a dog cage and elevated it with a plain table to capture within filming behind the table that our character Avery would be captured "behind bars".

This concept wasn't my own but such a creative and innovative touch to our project. We added an extra detail such as a bed, which we used a small day bed. For our following scenes did not require the same changes. For example our integration scene require table recycled from the prison scene and two bar stool tables. For our Officer Garcia's office scene we kept the same furniture and details in Emma's Dad's personal office space. The additional detail we added was the same table and bars for a special effect of Avery looking within Officer Garcia's office. Overall are innovation and teamwork definitely paid off and for our film and was fun and money saving process we used to create our scenes.

Scene Development

 Week 5!

As the week approaches to the end, I would like to end of this week's post with scene Development. How did the creation of our script and ideas influence what each scene would look like and incorporate through shooting.

Planning:

Our initial planning when creating our scenes was to incorporate foreshadowing of some sort and subtle hints and clues to the overall plot of the story. Our group as well wanted to add something visually eye catching to the background or setting. It led the too ultimate plan and execution of creating doodles and repetition of a name on the wall of our backdrop. The next brainstorm we conducted was making a detailed scene breakdown or order of events towards our story. It began first with having our credit sequence leading into introduction or development of our character. The following scenes would develop the storyline and details into the mysterious elements of our storyline. The ending scenes would continue to add mystery while still adding continuation of the story.

I added the first stages of our story board since to reference the first constructive planning my group and I initatied within planning the details and events in each scenes. You can reference our entire storyboard in my blog https://eattraveljade.blogspot.com/search?q=script (Script and Storyboard). Our group had many group calls via whatsapp where we were able discuss and show our location and space to work with before any shooting took place.

Purpose of Static/How is it's development key within our Production:

Our scenes are developed into credit sequence, flashback scene, final recollection moments of Avery. Our first scene our credit entails the development of our character Avery while she is in jail. Showing the detailed area of her surroundings and adding some mystery. Adding questions on Who? What? and Why? We developed our credit scene to still incorporate our film but not in a boring way. This scene while still displaying our credits develops background and insight onto what will happen in our story. Intrigues the viewer with curiosity within this beginning scene. For the flashback scenes these past memories were to give clues and further detail on how did Avery get to where she is.

The rest of our story and scenes reflect towards background and evidence toward the audience on the reasoning behind the film, as well as perfectly capture our representation elements discussed in my blog Media Theory. Static will reflect the genre mystery and pyschological horror. Reflect the theory or Gender Representation within our scenes. The overall purpose and goal is to capture our target audience into coherently understanding the purpose, vision, and theme of this project. Although our work is amateur and not at the highest level to be showcased our work in greater detail and wider attention this small project reflects the skills and resources myself and team used to develop our own creative work.

Costume Design/Props

 Week 4!

Wrapping up this week with our Costume Design, Makeup, and Props! One of my favorite parts was coming up with our costume and make-up design for our characters.

Costume Design:

While we had a cast of three members we highly focused on the two characters Avery and Officer Garcia. Starting Off with Avery, with two costumes needed. We first had a casual outfit that any typical teenager would wear; jeans, black tee's, hoodie's etc. Our actress chose to wear her regular clothes a black long sleeve and jeans to fit into this teenager look. In our discussion of our character development blog this simple outfit played well with Avery's personality. For our second and most important look we gave the character a hospital gown. We choose this to add sense of chaos and mentally ill approach, almost as if she came straight in from the hospital and was placed in jail cell. My group and myself added dirt stain's and blood to give off that dusty and used vibe from the gown since when purchased it would be new. The pictures below display our actress and group member Carolina in the hospital gown with makeup and hair done. As for our character Officer Garcia was a bit challenge to come up with a costume design. Our group and myself did not have access to a police officer or appropriate uniform of one. Instead we improvised with Emma's dad playing as Officer Garcia wardrobe. His outfit consisted of dark blue/navy button up shirt, blue jeans, brown belt and black sneakers. The approach was for a business casual appeal not to formal but not unprofessional.

Makeup:

Our makeup was mainly focused with the hospital gown scene for Avery. So luckily Officer Garcia needed no additional touches. We focused on mostly keeping the actresses face natural but emphasizing on a tired/hazy look on her face. With researching and looking at tutorials and references we applied nude colors from an eye shadow pallet. Such as Brown's and some black as well as adding blush to add some redness under eyes to create a tired and drained expression. Almost as if Avery never slept in her cell. In the pictures below display how this look came out. Along with the eye makeup we added small amounts of fake blood during shooting on hands and face to add a little gore and blood!

Props:

Props were essential for Officer Garcia's role. While we used one notable prop for Avery, most props were for the purpose of Officer Garcia's costume. With the supplies of emma's garage and stationary items we used Fake gun (dot blaster), walkie talkies (that were real), waist holder for gun, Rope, and handcuffs'( fake), white chalk marker. While most the objects were fake it still helped add more detail and overall look to our officer. Within the film it is not notecable you see all the items but were used somehow and some way in our film. Within our set we bought three backdrops

Titles-Fonts

 Week 5!

Officially Week 5 home stretch and today's blog will focus on titles and fonts used withing my project. This is important with this weeks blog correlating to production Company logo, along with credit and title sequencing within our film.

What makes Title-Font Unique?

A title is the very first thing that visually captivates an audience when discovering or learning about a film. The way the it's displayed is what adds the detailing and effect that the marketing/production team wants to carry across. With wide range of fonts makes any title stick out and seem appealing, whether its a smaller font, bold letters, Sharp, or just a plain font makes the text stand out. Our goal within our production is to incorporate a font that correlates with our already chosen title static. Along with our title choosing a font with our production name and credits sequence.

Video:

The video below is a great resource used with examples of different films and how the fonts and text add detail and what emotions while visually seeing them. This video serves great example and references and what kind of approach and feel would I want the title and font to reflect.

Planning:

Although with the long weekend that passed in week four, my group and I don't have initial concrete plan of the exact font to use for our production. However, with looking at other mystery and horror productions as reference our goal is to make mock up designs in Canva for our production company logo, as well as playing around in Adobe Express with some of our footage. To overall have a better visual analysis of water colors or fonts that stick out when it is viewed in the final product. In my the making of the movie poster I used bright yellow and very closely spaced texts, while in my head I had a different outcome the execution was quite different from the results. I realized from this and feedback there needs to be tone down of saturation perhaps different color font optioning. Learning from this mistake my group and are carefully planning and dedicating part of this week to planning and researching ways to elevate our production even further.

Company Logo

 Week 5!

Today's post will reflect on our groups production company logo. How did we come with a name? As well as designs that captivate the audience.

What is our name?

The name we choose which actually happy accident but funny overall. My group and I searched some words or phrases out of the box that could potentially add a fun test to our production name. We combined names like shutter films productions, ghost whisper productions, and even using a numbers and symbols in the name. Yet we never truly felt set on these names, it wasn't till my team member Emma that came up with idea of combining our names into one would be something unique. At first was just a simple laugh we thought until we actually took into affect combining our names. In result of this we developed J.E.C productions. The beginning of each of our first names was the easiest way that we could combine our names and really fit. From finally settling on a name we thought of many designs and colors or graphics or styles we wanted to incorporate within production logo. It was an exciting and surreal feeling that our film had a production and logo that we created on our own! From my analysis and critiques from my movie poster had confidence in producing better design and add animation.

The creation of the logo:

The ideas and thoughts of creating this logo were quite straight forward, when it came to its execution, it was slightly challenging and a lot more changes were made. My team and I looked at many fonts so many of them looked cool when first looking, when types it wasn't the vision everyone saw. We choose the Blanka font, it was something new and spunky we had never seen before when typed gave the first letter J a cool edge to the top of the J. Now with finding the right font was color choices and elements/design wanted to incorporate. Emma gave a suggestion since we used yellow for the last design, purple is the color corrector for yellow. Using this gave a new feel that would cancel out the harsh yellowing used in previous designs. For our J.E.C we colored a lavendar purple, yet we kept running into the troubles with yellow. We debated if in the productions at the bottom of our design should the text be purple, yellow, or plain black. As you can see in the editing process below the colors did shift as we analyzed and added more depth, the end result was in black. For elements my original idea was to incorporate film in some sort of way. I added a element of film roll it was cool at first, but did not suit the text and layout at all. When scrolling through more film tape elements I stumbled upon a camera element. It was perfect and quickly incorporated as the main element/design focus. With color, font, and design choosen all that was left was to add some details and animation. With another suggestion from Emma of adding a light sort of reflecting the words of our logo J.E.C to look as the camera was displaying them. This was the icing on the cake with some change of coloring and saturation and angling it was perfect. I spent roughly 30 mins properly timing both the lets to shown first before the text. Then carefully aligning the text to pop up when we see the light beaming from the camera, that would reflect altogethor J.E.C productions. Down below is the final clip itself along with the editing stages of what it looked like before the end result.

(Due to blogger being unable to add the video directly from my computer I've added the link to public view of the logo)

Character Development

 Week 4!

It is officially week 4! This week's focus is about character development and mise en scene elements! In today's posting I will discuss the planning and main attributes into our characters Avery, Officer Garcia, and more on who Avery's loved one who is deceased.

Who Is Avery?

Avery is a seventeen-year-old girl who is actually more reserved and quite girl. She is a senior in high school and has one best friend Raven. Both her best friend and Avery spend majority of their time together doing typical teenager hobbies. Avery as far as personality enjoys art, music and reading. Avery lives with her mother. They have a strained relationship, but Avery doesn't pay too much attention to their time spent together. Overall, our character honestly is a typical quiet girl next door. She has nothing spontaneous about her not a big social life. Soon Avery's life won't be so ordinary....

So How Did We Get Here?

Very unexpected for Avery Dawson to be involved in murder one could say. Let alone a seventeen-year-old is even head scratching thought alone. Not wanted or by choice but Avery has barely to really no recollection of the events of that happened on the horrible day of the murder. On this day it was Avery's eighteenth birthday. With not much plans and her mother going out of town for the week with plans to hang out with no guess her best friend. They had plans to go to a park and have picnic. Although Avery was in goods spirit it seemed something was notably off with her best friend. She was quite and quite passive aggressive towards Avery.

Memory?

Avery Memory is nonetheless very fuzzled from how she got into this murder and how she somehow is responsible. From the moment Avery was brought in for questioning and it was chaos she didn't have her guardian to assist with questioning no lawyer no concrete alibi just the scrambled recollection of details left in her memory. Avery's birthday none to say the least was going down hill. She felt defeated and miserable that no one would believe her account or story. I mean why would she kill her best friend? Yet that's not enough to convince Officer Garcia; the head officer on the case of this peculiar case. Officer Garcia is charge of overseeing Avery Dawson in temporarily cell in his unit facility. He begins to feel sense of eriness and mental insanity from Avery has she continuously scribbles Nevar and tallies all over the walls. He begs to differ how could a newly eighteen year old commit such a heinous act?

Set Design/Lightning

 Week 4!

Today's Post will primarily focus on Set Design and Lightning used within our filming process. My group and chose to start our filming ahead to be able to give flexiblity with our personal schedules as well as more time needed within the following weeks for any reshoots.

Set Design:

For this story there are three major locations and sets needed to create our storyline. The first one being the actual prison cell. This cell would offer in a wider scope to the auidence of what Avery's conditions were like while waiting to see and hear would happen to her next. Typically Prison Cells are smaller and very crammed spaces. From a tip from our first group meeting we choose to make the space feel open and bigger in the audiences perspective by using 3 walls and backdrop of Emma's in home studio. Using these three walls gave us the ability to play around with spacing and certain angles shot from Avery's profile to make the cell not seem as just one backdrop with dim lighting. The second set created was the integration room. Made in the same space as the cell we choose to keep this set very plain very minimalistic. Most integration scenes or sets are very plain with simply two to three chairs, a table and some sort of lightning source. Sequently we choose to keep this space very minimal and awkward almost a bland setting compared to the rest of the settings. We choose to set up the chairs and table Horizontally from each other almost giving the space an akward and very spaced out distance between Avery and Officer Garcia. Finally the last set created was Officer Garcia's office. We choose to create an office scene to sort of reflect more about who Garcia is an law enforcement officer. Choosing Emma Dad's office was the perfect location to film. It not only had the standard office supplies and furniture but personal additions such as family photos, art work, and books. It elvated the space to not look like a generic office but have personal touches almost like Officer Garcia decorated it himself.

Lightning:

Within every film lightning is key within creating the setting and mood of the film. Many horror and mystery films use low key lightning to create darker contrast adding an eerie setting. Within our film we choose to follow these techniques and create this exact tone. We used both lightbar to add brighter lightning when focusing on characters. For the set design of the integration room, we used the lightbar to draw intense lightning within the filming of out integration scene. We wanted the characters to almost feel overly lit within the space. Within filming we choose to use lower lightning and natrual lightning. We also hope to use editing with darker contrast to add a darker feel.

Video:

The video below is a great video I watched and took notes on of how creator and his students refrenced different films within their work for their own filming.

Sound

 Week 4!

Last posting for week four! Today's post will be discussing sound incorporated within our project.

Why is it Important?

First foremost in everything around us has or emits some sort of sound. The world as we know it is very noisy. So it would be very important that within our film we choose the appropriate sounds needed to create our story and give it life. Many films incorporate diegetic or non-diegetic sound. For example a film involving a scene of cooking could include diegetic sound of pan's clattering, or the oil sizzling on the pan. Another example would be hearing music playing from the perspective of the character listening to the music and no other sound. It's important that in our project we include either both or one of these sounds.

Initial Plans:

After discussing with my group our goal is to incorporate foley sounds, non diegetic sound, dialogue, and diegetic sound. With foley we plan to record all the heavy breathing, screaming, clanking of objects. Within our recording many of this sound becomes lost or over layered with other sounds, so we still want to recreate make sounds ourselves of these missing sounds. For our non diegetic sound to incorporate more into our title Static; static noise of a television. Within certain scene occuring in the jail cell and flashbacks we plan to layer this sound within editing. Our resource we would use are PixaBay since it offers non copyrighted sound and music. Giving us the flexibility to not wait for permission to use a copyrighted sound. Our dialogue would be filmed over in separate recordings since it would be lost within the original sound of the video. Referencing our script when we are recording the dialogue will help our actors for their lines and director and editor when laying over the sounds when it comes to the final product. Lastly, our diegetic sound would be any footsteps, heavy breathing, opening, nature soundscape, and squeaking of the white chalk marker written on the wall.

Video:

This video while short helped by providing an example to reference for both diegetic and nondiegetic sounds. As well as a definitions of both sounds.

Script and Storyboard

3rd Day of Week Three!

During the time in school my group and myself have collaborated on a script and storyboard for Static.

Initial Thoughts:

My group and myself thoughts when thinking of the storyboard and script is "How can we portray clear understanding of the plot, context as well as purpose within our film?". Mystery films while creating mystery and suspense within its genre it continues to progress with clues or details within the plot of the story that reveal the entire story. Given the time and restrictions within the project, our group will not have the full accessibility to work with long time span for filming and extra scenes. Our ultimate goal is creating a captivating mystery film that intrigues the auidence without giving away to many details away and make the storyline fun and playful reflecting with our experinces creating the film.

Storyboard:

Within the beginning of the film will the credit sequence of our film. Unlike a visually plain opening, our sequence will incorporate the shots of our main protagonist Avery. With inspiration of the film Vertigo by Hitchcock opening sequence of extreme close ups and panning of a woman's face. We choose this has inspiration as it features cool way visually appealing to the auidence. Therefore, within the first couple of shots will mostly be extreme close-up's, side views, and mid-shot's of Avery. With these camera techniques we want the auidence to feel very close and personal as if they were witnessing first hand this experience. Within planning our storyboard we created set designs to visually capture the environment and setting of our story that we have visual reference to execute our visual idea of this prison. With the use of editing and playing with lighting with our camera techniques, set design, sound and costume design our goal is to capture and eerie prison cell that leads to more questions than answers where the auidences feels intriguided while viewing the story.

Script:

Within our script we included the Production Name and Company Name along with the responding credits. We have broken down the script into four flashbacks. These scenes in order of when each dialogue occurs. We choose to make a script on dialogue since it was was best for us to follow and reference when filming each flashback with the cast of characters. The actors would have reference to the lines or events happening each scene. In the link below you will see the Script broken down by each dialogue said in each flashback. Using our storyboard above helped us have a reference to capture what the scenes will look like and entail to format a full readable script to follow within our shooting process.

Media Theory

It is Week 3 !

Today I will be discussing the theory I have chosen to incorporate and reflect in my project. As well as why I have chosen this theory.

Theory's:

There are many different media theories that represent how Media is viewed and shown today. THese theories develop a further develop understanding, representations displayed throughout different media platforms. This can be represented in television, films, production companies, marketing and even social media platforms. These diverse theories help us understand how Media not only is being displayed but the thought of concept what the thought behind of the media is. With this knowledge opens up the awareness that these theorists develop through their research and findings within media.

Theory incoporation:

The theory I have choosen to incorporate is the Gender Performativity Theory by Juidith Butler. Theory disscusses that gender roles are not natural concepts constructed within our society, but the repetiton within media of its roles are collectively understood. This theory reflects the aspect of my first representation being a female (woman) in a mental state. When most think of woman mentally unstable the reasons draw towards crack In their marriage or motherhood, or stress. This assumption of these causes broadcasted to all woman's mental instability isn't coherently correct as there are many reasons, many fall into mental demises. However, this "collective understanding" of how this woman which is unknown to the auidence is mentally unstable, the reasons of how she came to this. Thought this unknown but constructed analysis of how our character will represent this theory.

Why this Theory ?

Why I have chosen this Theory is noteably from my perspective most horror films revolve mainly a male protagonist. While there are many movies that have changed this approach and used female representation as their main focus, there are still female character's or set charcateristic given to that female role. Therefore, is stereotypical but "collective" viewpoint of specific gender seen in this element of media. From our viewpoint and overall goals from this project it will be the auidences determination in a sense for the beginning portion of the film to determine her reasoning for being trapped mentally and physically. While the film will give key understanding to the character it will not reveal to much into detail of this answer. Suquently giving the auidences the creativity to analyze their viewpoint of this characters demise on how it began.

Reflection:

Overall my final thoughts and vision is to clearly give the auidence "freedom" but as well display the factor of society's assumption of what ones gender roles or character is based on the opposite sex. Throughout Media this has been a constant debate and researched topic, as well as the introduction of additionally pronouns and gender community many have heatlily debated over this topic. With Butler's theory is a basis of how Media potray's these societal roles of gender within our everyday life's.

Objective:

The objective of the Group Meeting was to meet with other classmates to discuss the ideas and overall concept of our projects. This opens us as a class to discuss the diverse ideas and genre concepts developed within our groups or individually. As well as offer feedback and suggestions to any shots/angles, or script writing, costume etc. Hearing from different point of views from my classmates helped open up a horizon of fresh look to my project. Although my team members and I may not have had full story boards for our film, we offered each other suggestions on what types of scenes to add or climax to add to our story lines. As well as discussing our ideas and suggestions we all shared the URL's as seen above to our blog posts. Sharing these blog postings offered us insight and helpful research sources, film suggestions, inspiration, and more depth thought of each members insight of there project. Overall this meeting was a way for us a class to regroup and here some new insight on our projects and wide range of suggestions from other viewpoints.

Brianna Project and Suggestions:

Brianna although did not have a plot, she had a rough idea and genre choosen for her project. Brianna wanted to make a coming of age film. In her blog post she referenced Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, as well as Perks of being a Wallfower as inspiration on how she would like to develop as well as the themeing used in those prodcutions. Her rough idea would be centered around a teenager boy around 16-17 years old who is experiencing grief from a lost parent and is disappointed in his outcome of his teenage years. He finds his days deary and depressing, suquently he wants a change from this life. From this idea my group and I have well understanding of what kind of coming age film she looking for and offered some suggestions for a Plot. Brandon's suggestion being to use reference from other coming of age films by introducing an activity or club that interest's the character to push him to interact with others and make his life more eventful. My personal suggestion giving the age of the character is 16-17 years old that he is doing the tasks of writing an college essay only to be lost on what to write about due to the lack of excitement he offers in his personal life. Therefore this lack of personality and extraculliar's pushes the character to save his paper and join an activity or club to make himself stand out in his essay. Overall this concept for coming of age film is solemn and quirky look on how teenagers are perceived.

Brennan Project and Suggestions:

Brennan's concept young boy around his teens is on his way back from school gets approached by his notorious bully approaches and him and picks him. Brenna however does not want to make this typical bullying situation. So he adds a psychological element into his film. By creating the protagonist a killer that wants to pay revenge to his bully. His theme locations are using Weston nearby Parks and Libraries for the elements of the walk home from school. Overall Brennan has an interesting concept for his film that I think is unique and offers something sinister beyond the stereotypical pieces of bullying displayed in media. The group and myself suggestions were that to make sure to film good lighting to change of weather and climate in Florida, as well as offering a clear storyline when filming to not get too caught in scene with murder to just be shot in one take and not series of scenes of the murder. Brennan suggestion's for my portfolio project were related to the set design and how to add dimension and depth in the space created for the mental asylum. Since my group and I will most likely rely on backdrops', if not shot correctly the set and space itself can look to enclosed from the point of view of the audience. Brennan's suggestion was to focus on angles and shots that can incorporate a mixture of close up's and wide angle as well as panning to make the room feel not so enclosed. Overall his project and suggestions were notable and took into consideration.

Sebastian's Project and Suggestions:

Unfortanetly this member had no idea of any concept for their project. Which led the group to have little idea or thoughts to work of. This member did have rough inspirations to follow by for their project. Some of the inspiration they have choosen are Jaws, Knives Out, and Se7en. Most of these films being thriller or mystery my group and I only advice is to use those productions to decide on firstly a genre. Secondly to after finding the set genre to think some rough plot or idea to work with since if there is no idea at all makes it hard to work or understand what your project will entail. He did not contribute any suggestions to the members in the group or myself. I wish best of lucks for passing and overall finding any idea....

Amelia's Project and Suggestions:

Amelia had the most developed storyline and blog postings of the group. She knew had a set idea on what genre and plot she had choosen for portfolio. Amelia's project would be another coming of age film. It would follow around a Slyvie as the main character that has the conflict between her costal life in small town in Florida at home with friends and family and only child, as well on the verge of graduating has the aspirations of traveling abroad and exploring the world. Conflict being that her parents has a set plan for her after graduation. Sylvie feels bottled up by these expectations and wants to get out into the world. From this rough plot view and explanation of costume design, location, and script I am highly intrigued with this film. It something I would watch for myself if was an entire production and offers a wholesome coming of age concept. The only suggestions the group offered were to be careful with sound if filming near open water of a beach setting. As well as to reflect the characters interests either in their costumes design or personal space for example bedroom. I suggested for quirky and cute travel costume inspiration would be the film Mama Mia. It takes place in costal setting and the costume design reflects vacation/costal vibe. Overall Amelia had great plot and resources used throughout her project. She was very helpful in adding any advice for costuming and set design for my project.

Sofia Project and Suggestions:

Sofia is the third member with choosing a coming of age film. Seemingly a quite popular genre within the group. Sofia's rough idea's of what she would like her project to entail is a single mother that is battling a chronically ill disease in her efforts to study a higher education. The conflict being she is battling this disease that is keeping her bed ridden. Her second idea being similar to this however it entails teenager girl instead as well she would not be chronically ill but face some other challenge. Our suggestions were to choose the second option as the plot itself would develop rather well compared to the second option. Our advice was to include minor details of a child or loved one in to add the sense of the serious condition the character is in that shows her disparity in the situation. For example her children can bring her bowl of soup showing how seriously sick she is to the point she can't complete simple daily tasks without having to make entire scenes that develop how she got sick. She overall seems to have a good idea of the film she pictures on creating with her group.

Gabriel's Project and Suggestions:

Gabriel is the final member choosing the coming of age film as their genre. Their approach was to have a 16 year old teenage DJ who creates great mixs and tapes. Having aspirations to play for night clubs but unfortantely is to young to do so due to him being a minor. Offering a character vs .Society adversity which is a very cool element that not many have thought about when developing this project. The overall plot being that he will do the more "resonable approach" and get a fake ID to be able to play music in clubs. This idea was something new and cool idea that myself or the group thought of. The only challenge would be making sure to have proper copyright music if using as well a location where to film. As we ourselves are minors and cannot film in a club location. Overall with the proper planning of these scences and location it has potential to be fun film.

Reflection:

This first Group Meeting offered me new insight to my classmates ideas and visions they had when faced with this project. As well as helpful advice, tools, and resources to reference in the continuation of this project. I truly grateful I was offered this experience since I am greatly surprised and happy with all the suggestions and comments made in our group session in class. Overall despite one memeber, we all collectively collborated and gave helpful insight to one another's projects.

Final Summarization of Project

 Week 3 Final DAY!

Now with the final discussions and meetings within our group we have finalized the ultimate goal and vision of our portfolio project.

Summary:

Our project is called Static produced by JEC productions. Static will focus on a young teenage girl Avery who has been put into prison temporalily as she awaits the investigation of murder close to her. Within her waiting on law enforcement and results back from her Alibi she begins to go mentally insane in her cell as the horror's from that terrible night circle within her head. Officer Garcia is the head crime Officer on the case in charge of keeping her contained and finding evidence on who is responsible for this murder. Within our story using all the expertise learned over the course of year, my group and myself are incorporating camera, visual, and auidtory techniques to create a fun and engaging mystery film. We have researched films such as Vertgio, The Sixth Sense, and Pyscho as huge refrences to display within our film. In the next couple of weeks my group and I will share some of the progress we have of some practice clips of filming and directing our film.
