Week 4!
Today's Post will primarily focus on Set Design and Lightning used within our filming process. My group and chose to start our filming ahead to be able to give flexiblity with our personal schedules as well as more time needed within the following weeks for any reshoots.
Set Design:
For this story there are three major locations and sets needed to create our storyline. The first one being the actual prison cell. This cell would offer in a wider scope to the auidence of what Avery's conditions were like while waiting to see and hear would happen to her next. Typically Prison Cells are smaller and very crammed spaces. From a tip from our first group meeting we choose to make the space feel open and bigger in the audiences perspective by using 3 walls and backdrop of Emma's in home studio. Using these three walls gave us the ability to play around with spacing and certain angles shot from Avery's profile to make the cell not seem as just one backdrop with dim lighting. The second set created was the integration room. Made in the same space as the cell we choose to keep this set very plain very minimalistic. Most integration scenes or sets are very plain with simply two to three chairs, a table and some sort of lightning source. Sequently we choose to keep this space very minimal and awkward almost a bland setting compared to the rest of the settings. We choose to set up the chairs and table Horizontally from each other almost giving the space an akward and very spaced out distance between Avery and Officer Garcia. Finally the last set created was Officer Garcia's office. We choose to create an office scene to sort of reflect more about who Garcia is an law enforcement officer. Choosing Emma Dad's office was the perfect location to film. It not only had the standard office supplies and furniture but personal additions such as family photos, art work, and books. It elvated the space to not look like a generic office but have personal touches almost like Officer Garcia decorated it himself.
Lightning:
Within every film lightning is key within creating the setting and mood of the film. Many horror and mystery films use low key lightning to create darker contrast adding an eerie setting. Within our film we choose to follow these techniques and create this exact tone. We used both lightbar to add brighter lightning when focusing on characters. For the set design of the integration room, we used the lightbar to draw intense lightning within the filming of out integration scene. We wanted the characters to almost feel overly lit within the space. Within filming we choose to use lower lightning and natrual lightning. We also hope to use editing with darker contrast to add a darker feel.
Video:
The video below is a great video I watched and took notes on of how creator and his students refrenced different films within their work for their own filming.
