Mise en scene

Our task was were slip up into groups of four or five. One of each group member choose at random a slip of paper that contained a prompt of a character we would develop. We were given the freedom showcase this character however we wanted, whether by video game, presentation, boards etc. What we must include is visual representation, auditory, tactile, setting, and background. We use this rubric to set up stations in class and have classmates in other groups judge and rate there experience learning about the character. The character our group and I were given was Single father we named Peter Cook who worked as story time facilitator in a library. We decided to give him three children named Aroura, Amelia, and Oliver. In the link below is the full presentation on how we immersed the viewers into Peter cooks life. Incorporating visual, auditory, setting, and mood.

Peter Cook Presentation

In the presentation you will see a well and through out description of Peter Cook. From his family life, hobbies, occupation, his mood board, wardrobe and even menu of the week. We set up our station to have laptops with headphones connected with the laptops all displaying the presenation. Along with that we had a stuff animal of a dog to represent joey Oliver's stuff animal. As well as 5 childrens books to really set the tone of peter's foundness for books and storytelling. We developed are character by visually imaging him thinking of his physical appearance. Thinking of Peters costume design. Another keyt role we had to focus was the setting which would make most sense in a library of course. We not only just choose and thought of any ordinary library but what would best describe and reprsent who really is Mr. Cook.

My group members worked hard and diligently, collaborating on ideas for our character. My members could better their time management and how to distribute the tasks that each member should have. This assignment was enjoyable for me since it encouraged us to be creative and go deeply into the prompt given to us based on our personalities. It forced us to consider all of the details that contribute to the development of a character or individual. The use of stations added an interactive element to the experience, making it feel more hands-on and self-paced. The main disadvantage was a lack of clear instructions in certain stations and a short window to thoroughly inspect them all.

Genre Research Activity

Horror

With this being my favourite genre and with the upcoming Halloween season; it only made sense I choose this genre.

What is horror?

Horror in media is used to frigten, distrub or scare its audience. It focuses on dark, disturbing, or deadly issues in an attempt to create feelings of terror, dread, shock, or disgust. The Monster/Villain Threat: The characters' lives or sanity are constantly in danger. This danger may be:

Otherworldly: vampires, demons, ghosts, or curses (a example The Exorcist).

Human psychological disorders include severe violence, insanity, or serial killings (for example, Psycho).

Physical/Sci-Fi: Aliens, horrific physical transformations, or catastrophic catastrophes (for example, The Fly or Alien).

Content

Foreshadowing is a technique used in horror films to create a sense of dread and anticipation by introducing subtle clues and symbols that make the horrific events seem inescapable.

Hereditary (2018)

Ex: The film Hereditary shocking conclusion seems predictable because of the Graham family's chosen fate as members of a demonic cult. In addition to being a true supernatural conspiracy, the eerieness  also serves as a metaphor for mental illness and psychological trauma.

In horror, the main goal of the protagonist is to stay safe from the monster, which creates fear. This character faces a fate worse than death because it violates the Core Value of Damnation to Life. The audience’s main emotion is fear, which gets resolved during the Core Event. In this moment, the victim is at the mercy of the threat but eventually gains the strength to fight or sacrifices their life.

An essential aspect of effective horror is manipulating the audience’s senses, primarily through the skills of sound and filmmaking. Directors employ underexposure and low-key lighting, often referred to as chiaroscuro, to conceal threats in the shadows and darkness, intensifying viewers' unease regarding the unknown. Dutch angles and Point-of-View (POV) shots, which place the audience in the role of either the pursuer or the prey, are two examples of disorienting perspectives used in film to portray psychological confusion. Furthermore, sound design plays a crucial role: dark soundscapes and erratic scores instill a sense of dread, while strategically timed silences followed by sudden loud noises generate jump scares.
Texas Chain Saw Massacre 1974

To capitalize on people's common anxieties and generate a lot of word-of-mouth advertising, horror movie marketers utilize straightforward but effective techniques.

One key tactic is to make fear feel genuine by blurring the line between reality and imagination. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) serves as a notable example, cleverly marketed as "Inspired by True Events." The film’s chilling,This deception idea, which was repeated in both the opening narration and marketing materials, increased the lifelike picture. It was a resourceful, low-cost strategy that capitalized on the public's fascination with real crimes to attract a wide audience..

                                                    Friday the 13th 1980
Friday the 13th (1980) revolutionized the horror genre, notably the slasher film, by developing a highly successful pattern. Special effects became a big selling point for horror films in the future as gore and graphic death sequences got increasingly popular. The film also reinforced the widely held concept that characters who use drugs or have sex before marriage are bound to die, adding a socially aware element that dominated 1980s horror. Finally, the strategy's effectiveness was shown by its massive film box office success on a low budget, which created the long-running horror franchise model and made its elements—which ranged from the distant summer camp to the iconic sound design—instantly recognisable in popular culture.

                                   The Exorcist 1973

The Exorcist (1973) established the subgenre of spiritual horror and grounded supernatural terror in a frightening, accessible reality, so revolutionizing and strongly aligning with the horror genre. The film raised the standard for the amount of shock and explicit horror that is permitted in mainstream cinema by introducing horrifying, bodily visuals to the audience, such as the 360-degree head-turn and projectile vomiting. Most significantly, it addressed profound societal fears by addressing the issue of faith, with possession proving the existence of both God and the Devil, thereby providing a world in which supernatural evil is a real physical danger that needs to be fought by human beings.

Sound Projects

In the last two weeks we were tasked with making two sound projects. Our first project was to create a one minute sound only film. We were given the creativity to choose the storyline and work with a partner. We were to create an outline of the sounds we would use as well as the sounds we would create using foley. Additionally film the process of making the foley sounds. We were free to use any editing platform of our choice as well as provided with many free resources of sounds to download. Our second project focused back to our one word film. Were tasked with revisiting the film adding the necessary sounds to make the film complete. We had to as well make an outline of the scenes and sounds incorporated for our film.

As well as the freedom to work with any editing platform. The outlines for both projects helped us stay organized by creating a baseline of what sounds were needed to match the scenario's of our story. It helped channel all of the soundscapes needed to complete the full setting. In first project i utilized clip-champ as the editing tool allowed to add more sounds and layering. For the second project i used Adobe Premier to create smoother transitions and to go back to our original film. I believe that the story line of my first project was relatively simple but create storyline to incorporate all the sounds of the forest setting I choose. What I would improve was the foley sounds we created as I don't think they were the best quality we produced given the circumstances we had.

With quieter setting and objects I believe my partner and I would have produced better sounds for our foley portion. The second project I really feel confident in our foley creation as well as sound affects. They were very crisp and match the action of the storyline. What I would say to improve is next project to not incorporate a musical aspect as it was quite difficult to come up with the right sound to match our storyline and word chosen.
